22/1/1968:

News flashed that Bapuji Aney expired yesterday at Bombay. He was eighty-eight years old.  He was follower of my great grandfather Khaparde and Tilak.  He hailed from Yeotmal adjacent to my township.  Whenever in Amravati he used to stay with grandfather.

He was member of the Viceroy’s council and presided first session of All India Hindu League held at Lucknow in 1935.  Later on he left Tilakites and Swarajists and joined hands with Gandhiji.  Before that in 1928 he worked with Tej Bahadur Sapru, Subhash Bose and others under the chairmanship of Motilal Nehru.  The committee was appointed by All Parties Conference to consider and determine the principles of the Constitution for India.  After joining Congress he became a big wig.  In 1928 Aney was appointed as the sole arbitrator by the Congress Working Committee on the advice of Gandhiji to resolve the feud between Bose Brothers and Sengupta faction of the Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee. Sengupata charged Subhash Bose of rigging the elections and becoming president of the B.P.C.C.

Jawaharlal Nehru respected M.S.Aney from the core of his heart and Aney used to be his personal guest whenever in Delhi and his daughter Indira used to take care of the guest.  In the evening of his life he headed separate Vidarbha Movement and left Congress.  He was so high in Nehru’s esteem that Nehruji did not allow any congress candidate to oppose him in the election for Membership of Parliament from Nagpur.

In 1958 as an elected President of the Students union of my college I invited Bapuji Aney to address the students.  Mr. T.G. Deshmukh, later Congress M.P., M.L.A. and minister was in charge of his programmes.  He denied the invitation stating that Bapuji had frail health and was surviving on one lung and due to extra strain if he popped off the whole Vidarbha movement would go to dogs.  However T.G. was my eldest brother’s collegiate chum and whenever in Amravati would stay with us.  On my insistence he allowed Bapuji’s address with specific time limit.  It was a great success.  I held a condolence meeting of Bapuji in the College in which all students and staff paid homage to this great man.
